  • IMO signs (International Maritime Organization) are standardized safety symbols designed to communicate risks, safety equipment locations, and evacuation routes on ships and vessels, complying with international regulations. The current standard for these signs is defined by IMO Resolution A.1116(30), which aligns safety signage with ISO 7010 and ISO 24409-2 standards.

Here is a technical overview of IMO signs, materials, and regulations:

    1. Key Regulations and Standards

  • IMO Resolution A.1116(30): Adopted in 2017 (effective from Jan 1, 2019), this resolution mandates that escape route signs and equipment location markings comply with ISO 7010 and ISO 24409-2.
  • SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea): Requires clear, photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) signs for low-location lighting (LLL), fire control plans, and exit routes.
  • ISO 15370 & A.752(18): Define the technical requirements and testing procedures for Low Location Lighting systems.

  • 5. Common Material Coding

Manufacturers often use a 6-digit code to identify the material and type:

  • 81xxxx: Photoluminescent self-adhesive vinyl
  • 82xxxx: Photoluminescent rigid PVC
  • 83xxxx: White self-adhesive vinyl
  • 85xxxx: White, rigid PVC or paper
  • 86xxxx: Transparent vinyl

  • 4. Design and Dimensions

  • Visibility: Sign sizes are determined by the maximum viewing distance, generally conforming to ISO 3864-1.
  • Text/Symbols: While traditional signs often included English text, newer standards (A.1116(30)) prefer universal symbols, sometimes allowing for bilingual text.
  • IMPA/ISSA Codes: IMO signs are frequently ordered using standard codes from the IMPA (International Marine Purchasing Association) catalogue for easy identification.

  • 3. Technical Specifications and Material

Most modern IMO signs are photoluminescent to ensure visibility in power failure scenarios.

  • Material: Usually photoluminescent self-adhesive vinyl, rigid PVC, or aluminum, designed for harsh marine environments.
  • Durability: Indoor life usually exceeds 5 years, with good resistance to oil, grease, and common cleaning agents.
  • Photoluminescent Properties: High-intensity materials are used, such as those that meet or exceed ISO 15370, often providing immediate, high-luminosity during blackouts.
  • Mounting: Often supplied with self-adhesive backing (PE closed-cell foam) or prepared for fixing via screws/brackets for 180° viewing.

  • Fire Control Symbol Signs: Mark fire extinguishers, fire doors, and manual call points.
  • Emergency Exit/Escape Route Signs: Indicate exit routes, including low-location lighting and directional arrows.
